Comal ISD Council of PTAs Hosts Donation Drive for Communities in Schools

April 29, 2021 - The Comal ISD Council of PTAs hosted a successful donation drive for Communities in Schools of South Central Texas (CIS) this spring, serving 2,248 district students in need. The Council was able to donate $4,550 along with non-perishable food and essential items to CIS just before Spring Break in its Back the Future community donation drive.

“We planned the Back the Future drive as a way to support students and families who are in need within our own communities,” says Ouima Richardson, the event’s chair. “After the snowstorm in February knocked out the power and water to many in our community, it brought to light the need of many families in our district. This was a way for us to help them and bring our communities together.”

With the donations received, CIS was able to send students home with backpacks of food and essential items such as shampoo, toothpaste, hand sanitizer and more the Friday before Spring Break.

Richardson reached out to local businesses to join the effort. These community partners include Apex Leadership Co., Boy Scouts of America, Canteen, Frost Bank, GVTC Communications, H-E-B, McGarrell Orthodontics, Raising Cane’s, the Rustic Bean Café, Schertz Family Dental, Texas Med Clinic and Tropical Smoothie Cafe.

Comal ISD campus PTAs were instrumental in both giving and collecting donations including the PTAs from Danville Middle School, Davenport High School, Garden Ridge Elementary, Hoffmann Lane Elementary, Indian Springs Elementary and Rahe Bulverde Elementary.

Communities in Schools of South Central Texas works with 50 schools in seven school districts including Comal ISD, serving more than 4,000 students and families.
