April Board Recognitions Include State, National Qualifiers

April 29, 2022 - The Comal Independent School District’s Board of Trustees honored more than 70 students and staff members for various recognitions during its April board meeting.

Students who were recognized this month included state qualifiers as well as national qualifiers in various activities.

The first group to be honored were students involved in SkillsUSA, which is a Career and Technical Education (CTE)-based organization that provides students in middle and high school with opportunities to prepare for careers in trade, technical and skilled-service occupations.

High school SkillsUSA students from Canyon High School and Canyon Lake High School competed in various categories and earned spots in the state competition.

Stock Show & Rodeo Grand Champions & National Qualifiers

The Wool Judging Team from CHS won Grand Champion honors at both the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and the Houston Stock Show and Rodeo. In addition, this team recently was named Reserve Champions at the state contest and qualified for the National competition in June. This is an incredible feat, and this team has been led by four senior students: Riley Ehlers, Garrett Gibbins, Brock Jonas and Kinsley Marini.

In addition to these seniors, the winning team also includes Lauren Albracht, Cassidy Henderson, Carlie Kelso and Autumn Sims. Their teacher and adviser is Lance Jonas.

In addition, from CHS is the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Grand Champion Broiler winner, Hudson Hege.

Fine Arts State Qualifiers

The district’s fine arts programs also had state qualifiers and state winners who were recognized at the April board meeting. For UIL Theatrical Design, two students qualified for state competition including Shreya Patel from CHS for her set design of Murder on the Orient Express. The CHS technical theatre director is Erin Kinkade-Dyal.

Also qualifying for the UIL Theatrical Design state competition from Smithson Valley High School is Chloe Morgan. Her theatre teacher is James Black.

Winter Guard State Champions

The final student recognition for the April meeting was to honor the Davenport High School Winter Guard team which won the Scholastic AA Color Guard State Championship competition.
