April 4, 2026 - Davenport High School senior Caleb Atkins is no stranger to the limelight. Throughout his four years of high school, Atkins has received numerous awards and recognitions, ranging from being named All-State each year to recently receiving 1st chair for Jazz and Region band. The hard work Atkins has poured into his passion is evident as he continues to be a top performer amongst the competition.
Inspired to pursue music in the sixth grade, Atkins was first introduced to the world of band by his Band Director father, Patrick Atkins.
“My dad is the band director at La Vernia High School, and previously the band director at Steele High School,” said Atkins. “I have attended many band rehearsals in my youth, so I knew I would join once old enough.”
Atkins is a proud trumpeter for the DHS band, making appearances at football games, jazz band recitals, and competitions for everything in between. He was the Marching Band Brass Captain his junior and senior year, as well as the Lead Trumpet for the Jazz Band, the Principle Trumpet for the Wind Ensemble, and a Trumpet Show Soloist all four years.
With the nonstop musical appearances comes hours and hours of rehearsals. Atkins dedicates a majority of his free time to advancing his trumpeting skills.
“It is difficult and it takes a lot of work ethic. You have to always make time to practice because when you aren’t practicing, someone is getting better," explained Atkins, who also spends time playing for his local church.
All of Atkins' hard work pays off as he pursues his dream career in the music field. Atkins received the 2026 Bruce Kenner Memorial scholarship and has committed to playing trumpet for the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, under Trumpet Director Dr. Brian Walker.
The standout musician intends to receive a degree in music education while playing for the highly competitive UNT Marching Band. After college, Atkins would like to play for one of the nation’s military bands before pursuing a career as a band director in public education.
With hard work, dedication, and perseverance Caleb Atkins has set a high bar for the band program at Davenport High. With the support of his family, friends, and instructors, he has become a wonderful example of what Growing Greatness looks like in Comal ISD.
Thank you Caleb Atkins for always giving 100% on your Path to Success!
